노무현 대통령과의 추억

비통하다.
억울하고 분노스러웠을 순간들이 많았겠지만 그래도 참고 살아 좀 더 좋은 날들을 기다릴 수도 있지 않았을까.
진실로 수천억의 돈을 뇌물로 먹고, 수많은 사람을 학살한 전직 대통령들은 아직도 당당하게 살고 있는데 왜 그렇게 허망한 삶을 마감했을까
그 마음을 다 헤아릴 수 없는 우리로서는 안타깝기만 하다.
이해할 수 없다.
대통령 퇴임 후에 나라의 원로로서, 사회의 리더로서 아직도 할 일이 많다고 생각했는데 이렇게 비극적인 최후를 맞고 말다니! 퇴임후에도 사회적으로 존경받고 열정적으로 활동하는 그런 대통령을 우리는 얼마나 보고 싶었던가. 도대체 그동안 우리 사회에는 어떤 일이 있어났던가.
나는 노무현 전 대통령을 대통령이 되기 훨씬전부터 만났고 알아왔다.
그가 이상수변호사와 함께 거제의 대우 옥포조선소 노사분규에서 제3자개입죄로 감옥에 갔을 때 나는 그의 변호인이었다. 감옥에 있는 그를 만났을 때 그는 오히려 밖의 감옥보다 안에 있는 감옥을 더 즐거워하는 모습이었다.
우리가 인권변호사로서 민변을 만들었들 때 당연히 그는 우리의 멤버였다. 언젠가 민변 회의가 수안보 온천의 한 호텔에서 열렸을 때 저녁 늦게 도착한 그가 부산의 인권활동 소식을 전하던 기억이 난다.
서울의 종로에서 국회의원으로 당선되었들 때 그의 지구당사무실이 내가 사무처장으로 있던 참여연대의 바로 옆에 있었다. 가끔 함께 식사를 하곤 하였다. 서울시장을 꿈꿀 때 나는 <서울의 고쳐야 할 99가지 장면>을 책으로 내 보라고 권하여 귀를 쫑긋 세우던 그를 기억한다. 그리고 그 다음 총선 때 그는 당선이 확실하던 종로구를 버리고 부산에 가서 장렬하게 낙선했다.
<동선하로>라는 식당을 개업할 때 그 개업식에서 동업자중의 한 사람이었던 그를 만날 수 있었다. 낙선한 꼬마민주당 사람들이 주로 돈을 내어 만든 식당이었다. 그날 앞치마를 두르고 우리를 안내하던 그의 모습이 생각난다.
여러차례 TV토론에서 그를 만날 수 있었다. 옆에서 보면 그는 노트 하나, 메모장 하나 없이 늘 말하곤 했다. 늘 자신의 말과 행동에 자신이 넘쳤다. 자신의 신념이 투철하니까 무슨 이야기를 하면서도 거침이 없었다.
그리고 그 옆에는 늘 이기명 후원회장이 따라다녔다. 낙선으로 정치 건달을 하던 시절에도 일심단편 그를 모시던 이기명씨가 참으로 존경스러웠다. 또한 이기명씨같은 충성스러운 신봉자를 가질 수 있었던 그가 부러웠다.
노무현 전 대통령은 늘 촌놈티가 풀풀 나는 사람이었다. 다듬어지지 않은 야생마 그 자체였다. 바람을 가르며 달리는 사람이었다. 그 신선함이, 그 담대함이 그를 대통령으로까지 만들었을 것이다.
그리고 청와대로 간 뒤에도 3번 청와대에서 만났다. 그러나 청와대에서 만났을 때의 얼굴은 이미 과거의 얼굴이 아니었다. 늘 상기되어 있었다. 오만해 보이기도 하였다. 과거 만나던 때의 따뜻한 미소나 인간적인 느낌을 가지기 어려웠다. 그것도 그럴 것이 이미 대통령이 된 그와 그의 정책을 나는 비판하는 입장에 있었다.
뜻은 좋은데 거칠고 다듬어지지 않은 정책이 적지 않았다. 그래도 근본적인 개혁방향과 선의에 대한 동의를 전제로 한 비판이었다. 이명박 정부가 들어선 뒤 우리는 그나마 참여정부가 훨씬 나았다는 생각을 더 절실하게 하게 되었다.
퇴임 후 아름다운가게 명예점장을 맡으면 어떠냐고 공개제의를 하기도 했다.
그러나 자신의 향리 봉하마을에 돌아가 마을만들기에 집념을 보였다
그러나 정치는 무상한 것, 새로이 권력을 잡은 측과 몇몇 언론들은 집요하게 그를 공격했고 괴롭혔다.
640만불의 돈을 받았다고 그가 검찰에서 조사를 받고 있었다. 엄격히 법적으로 보면 뇌물일지도 모르겠다. 아마도 노대통령은 박연차 태광실업 회장이 아주 과거부터 막역한 친구이고 오랜 후원자여서 뇌물을 받는다는 의식을 별로 가지지 않았을 것이다. 그가 진정으로 뇌물을 받으려고 했다면 왜 박연차 회장에게서만 받았겠는가. 돈을 주려는 사람들이 줄을 섰을텐데. 나는 언젠가 이 정부가 노대통령에 대한 수사와 이번 자결사건으로 큰 부메랑을 맞을 것이라고 본다.
그는 갔다.
슬프고 고통스런 일이다.
그 슬픔을 딛고 정의를 바라는 사람들은 살아남아서 다시 새로운 세상을 열어가야 하지 않는가.
